| Sean experienced Ulcerative Colitis
when he was 15, this continued until about 16, when he had an operation
to deal with the problem. At 17 Sean had a reversal of the procedure,
which went fine on the day, but he was to return home only to black out
in bed the following day.... when he awoke, he had no use of his legs
whatsoever...
During the reversal procedure an epidural (pain control via an invasive procedure into the spine) was implemented, which it turns out was administered and subsequently nursed incorrectly. Beginning his route to recovery, Sean went to Stoke Mandeville, a rehabilitation center which he found to be of no use, thinking it to mainly be aimed at acclimatizing people to living in wheelchairs, whereas Sean was looking for a route back to walking... Coming to Brighton General, Sean was disappointed to find that funding issues were affecting the service he was using, until it reached the point where he was being offered a 20 minute session per month! Needless to say this was very insufficient for Sean's plans, and so he stopped using the service. Sean then went to Gloucestshire, to a center that had brought to Britain a method from Russia, developed by a gymnast there who had suffered from a broken back, he had pioneered his own method and was again walking... Sean found this technique to have many positive results and remains impressed by their work. Sean also speaks highly of some physiotherapy services he has been using in London for some time now, thinking them to be highly effective and beneficial - and continues to use their services to this day. Sean is a newcomer to William Moon Lodge, using our services for only a month at this point (05/04/2002) but is pleased already with the service. He is working with Steve in the pool, and has been walking in the water, with increasing confidence, without assistance, a boost for morale and the determination necessary to forge ahead despite such colossal odds. Steve and Sean have been doing physio in the pool, with Sean pushing back against resistance offered by Steve, and is delighted to report that muscles long unused and wasted away are beginning to regain mass and tone, mainly toes and quadraceps, a definite step in the right direction! Thanks Sean for having your picture taken J
