New parts of the Centre

Swimming at the Centre’s Hydrotherapy Pool was launched in October by Paul Palmer, the Olympic medallist, and we are able to offer various therapeutic services using its facilities. Hydrotherapy Pools are much warmer than usual swimming pools, the extra heat helping with the loosening of joints during exercise. The pool will be open for hire by private individuals and companies some days and in the evenings.

The unusual five senses Water Garden was opened in August by Betty Walsh, the Mayor of Brighton and offers relaxing surroundings for our members to enjoy good weather. The garden includes a raised pond and waterfall, a stream of flowing water around and under the garden, seating, differently textured flooring and wind chimes. As well as providing interesting background sounds, the wind chimes allow members with severe visual impairment to navigate their way through the garden and to the doors.

We are now enjoying a new ‘on-line’ existence by connecting to the Internet. As well as having e-mail and web browsing services available, we have published a three hundred page site on the World Wide Web offering information about the Society and its history and links to useful material for visually impaired users. Over the next year we will be expanding our members facilities with a computer dedicated to their Internet use. For those of you who understand such things, our web address is: http://www.bsblind.co.uk
