Recent research carried out with parents in the South East established that there is a dire need for a specialist Toy Library for children who are visually impaired. The trail and error syndrome that occurs at present is expensive and frustrating to parents who sometimes struggle to afford stimulating toys which, when purchased are often inappropriate. Parents explanation is "it's absolute hell."
The Toy Library will complement rather than compete with others, offering the more expensive specialist items, to stimulate children's vision. In addition to the manufactured toys there will be containers of "bits & pieces," which parents can use to make items to stimulate their children's vision. Suggestion sheets, and workshops will support this activity.
The Toy Library is adjacent to the Main Library and will include a meeting area. Workshops, support and advice will be offered on the use of the equipment available, or parents can simply exchange experiences with each other. Parents will be encouraged and trained to organise and manage some of the activities.
As an accredited RSA & NVQ training centre we have agreed to provide accredited training courses for other Toy Library Staff and offer a meeting place for Toy Libraries to hold workshops or meetings.
A Toy Library Project Co-ordinator has been employed for 24 hours per week.A grant of £3,000 has been given for fitting out the toy library and for the purchase of a number of the specialist items. A further £3,000 will be required to complete the present stock list.Opening Times - Three times a week and one late evening opening.
Lending - Three items at one time, for three weeks. (Extensions considered)
Toy Library to commence September 1997.
As you can see, the old toy library is in need of some improvement:
