| The Karten CTEC
(Computer-aided Training, Education and Communication) department is a
state of the art computer facility, comprising of twenty fully interactive
P.C.'s. The facility offers people with disabilities the chance to acquire
computer skills for vocational and educational purposes, as well as
providing users with the equipment and knowledge to explore the Internet
for personal interest and recreation. The Karten facility has been carefully constructed to accommodate users with special requirements. The computer equipment can be modified to ensure easy access and comfort for all through the use of height adjustable workstations, larger monitors and also touch screen monitors. In addition, we have a range of specialised software and access devices to help users make the most of the facility. These include speech recognition software, onscreen keyboards, adaptable keyboards and scanning software. All machines are connected to a network and a dedicated ADSL (internet connection) allowing it's users quick and easy access to the Internet. Under careful supervision, participants are encouraged to explore the Internet as a unique source of information and means of communication. We believe that information technology can empower people and through the World Wide Web they can become part of the global Internet community. Educational and Vocational Training: The Karten computer facility offers a variety of assessed and non-assessed courses, dependant on the needs and abilities of individuals. However, participants are not required to have any previous experience of information technology, as our courses are designed for beginners, as well as the more experienced and accomplished computer user. For those wishing to expand their knowledge and skills the Karten Centre offers a structured and fully accredited learning programme in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) The Centre will provide for it's clients:
