In Grade 1 Moon, the following characters are used:

In Grade 1 the sign for AND is used only for the word "and". The sign for TH is used wherever th occurs; when standing alone it represents the word "the".

The numeral sign is an inverted TH sign. When placed in front of any of the first ten letters of the alphabet it changes them as follows:

Contractions

These four contractions are used only at the end of words.
Punctuation marks

The short stop . stands for the comma, semi-colon, colon and abbreviation stop, and the dash when followed by a short space.
The full stop is represented by two dots placed side by side ..
The omission of letters in a word is indicated by three dots ... and the breaking off of a sentence by five dots .....
The apostrophe is denoted by a single dot placed on a level with the top of the letter.
The exclamation mark is placed immediately after the word.
The question mark is placed before the question, the end of which is shown by a short stop.
The first parenthesis sign is placed at the beginning and the second at the end of the words or phrases in parenthesis.
The division of verse sign is used in scripture and poetry.
Guide Lines

After the chapter heading, the first line is set from left to right, and the second line from right to left, the direction being reversed at the end of every line. A curved line, the guide line, takes the reader down to the line below. The letters, however, are not reversed.
The following words are in Moon type and signify:

Spacing
In order to save space and to allow equal space between words, it is frequently necessary to break words at the end of lines. The broken portion of a word is always set close to the guide line to distinguish it from the completed word, which has the usual word-spacing between it and the guide line.
Paragraphs are indicated by a wider space than that between sentences. A paragraph space is left after each line of poetry. Chapters and sections begin on a new line.
